eye healthGood vision and quality of life go hand in hand. But as you age, you become more at risk for sight-threatening eye problems such as macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. That’s why protecting your eyesight and keeping your eyes healthy as you age is essential. To learn more about ways to preserve your vision now and into the future, check out these useful guidelines:

  1. Eat Right
Contrary to what your mother may have told you, carrots are not the only foods that help you see well. Foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and vitamins C and E have also been known to protect against age-related eye problems. Consider adding to your diet green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale, as well as salmon or tuna. Eggs, nuts and beans are also good choices, as are citrus fruits and juices. |
  2. Kick the Habit
If you smoke, you’re putting yourself at greater risk for optic nerve damage, cataracts and macular degeneration. Talk to your doctor about starting a smoking cessation program.
  3. Avoid UV Rays
Overexposure to ultraviolet rays ups your chance of getting vision problems. The best way to combat the effects of UV rays is with proper sunglasses. Look for a pair that blocks at least 99% of UVA and UVB rays, as well as ones that have polarized lenses to reduce glare.
  4. Wear Safety Glasses
Whether on the job or at home, if you work with hazardous materials it’s important to wear safety glasses at all times. Wearing eye protection will shield your eyes from debris, chemicals and objects that can damage your eyes.
  5. Take Regular Computer Breaks
You’re not doing your eyes any favors by staring at a computer screen for hours on end. By doing so, you can cause eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision and neck, back and shoulder pain. Take regular breaks from your computer (every 20 minutes or so), and when you are looking at your computer screen, don’t forget to blink!
